The Credit River got its name from the French traders who bought furs from the Indians in exchange for clothing, guns and household supplies. They often supplied the Indians with goods "on credit", and the site became known as "the river of credit."

Port Credit was incorporated as a village on January 1, 1914, and then as a town on January 1, 1961. Port Credit proudly became part of the City of Mississauga 17 year later on January 1978.

During the most of the 19th century, Port Credit's main industry was stonehooking. This provided stones for many of Toronto's historic buildings as well as paving stones, sand and gravel roads.

A railway line was open between Toronto and Hamilton in 1855, as a hub of activity began around Port Credit, the Port Credit station became an important stop halfway between these two centres.
